Usman Olayemi is a shining example of the type of early-career professional the construction industry covets. He is passionate about the implementation of digital construction in his community. Usman is a leader in digital transformation within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry in Nigeria and greater Africa.
He is the author of an innovative conference paper titled “Benefit of integration of 5D BIM in cost Management practice in Quantity surveying firms”.
Usman was exposed to the construction industry at an early stage of his life. This early exposure assisted him to gain vast knowledge and experience in construction contract management which enable him to serve as a Project Quantity Surveyor. Successfully delivering projects all across Nigeria and Africa. Further he is the cofounder of a tech solution company that assist companies, individuals and educational institutions in training and implementation of Building information modelling (BIM).
RDS BlueBIM: What inspires you about working in construction?
Usman: As I was growing up, I watched my father and what he was doing, I learned about the role that construction plays in helping to achieve sustainable cities, promoting healthy living, and alienating poverty. From a very early age, I have been exposed to the construction industry. I had on several occasions gone with my father to the various building sites where he worked. On those sites my love for the construction industry started, but back then I didn’t really recognize it. As I got older, I began to find out how much I love sustainable construction. According to the United Nation (UN) in 2018, 1 out of 4 urban resident lives in a slum-like condition. The world is becoming increasingly urbanized. Since 2017 more than half of the world population has been living in the cities and this share is projected to rise to 60% by 2030. So being part of the next construction industry changer is my motivation.
RDS BlueBIM: What excites you most about the future of construction technology?
Usman: The construction industry is being revolutionized by technology and those who refuse to change the way the work and adopt the new trends of technology will be rendered useless in the coming years in construction.
The application of BIM, VR, AR and Cloud computing always excites me because more jobs are done faster and there is much less repetitive work.
RDS BlueBIM: What Bluebeam Revu workflows do you use?
Usman: I have been using Bluebeam for 3 year now, I started using Bluebeam Revu CAD but currently I am making use of Bluebeam Revu Extreme. This version helps me to document my work very well, and speed up my takoffs with all the additional features it offers.
RDS BlueBIM: What was the process like before Bluebeam?
Usman: Right from my Bachelor degree days I always looked for every alternative to eradicate the use of paper. Bluebeam Revu has allowed me to work on several projects without doing the general paper work as a Quantity Surveyor. I have done more that 20+ project using Bluebeam Revu and every time my work rate is much faster and more accurate.
RDS BlueBIM: What have you noticed has been the biggest impact of going digital?
Usman: The biggest impact of going digital is that we are able to remove paper out of our industry. Complex projects and designs are more frequent and this makes it more important to have the digital skills in order to solve complex problems within a shorter period of time. More new skills are developed and more products are available for use.
RDS BlueBIM: What advice would you give other companies that are first discovering Bluebeam?
Usman: My advice is that they should embrace change and go digital in all their processes and workflows. Bluebeam Revu software should become an important tool within their company because it is user friendly great for doing takeoffs and more importantly collaborating with others.
